In our community solar class, we shed light on  discuss the voluntary renewable energy credit market. But we also give credit where credit is due. Indianapolis Power and Light has the best renewable energy policy in the country, and should set the standard for what every utility in the country should be following in terms of voluntary renewable energy sales.

According to Rider 21 on their rate schedule, RECs are sold to residential customers at $0.001/kwh. This is roughly 95% below the average market price of RECs to voluntary retail customers. Why is IPL’s price so low?

Perhaps they feel that a voluntary renewable energy buyer’s money should go to the project, and not fund utility overhead.
